Castle - Manor – Guest House - Hotel
a journey back through time & history

From Johannes Brahms to Heiner Lauterbach... tradition and lifestyle united in one castle. Leaf through the storied & colorful history of Hotel Schloss Leonstain and of the adjacent Wörthersee.

Hotel Schloss LeonstainThe history of 4-star Hotel Schloss Leonstain, one of the most historic buildings on Wörthersee, also tells you how much, even far back in the past, an array of famous personalities treasured the Carinthian-style hospitality and unique cuisine of Schloss Leonstain.

In the second half of the 12th century, Dietrich von Projern built Burg Leonstain on a rocky plateau in Pörtschach, today known as the “Leonstain Ruins”. The heraldic animal used at that time – a lion striding over a mountain ridge – gave the fortress its name, and today’s Hotel Schloss Leonstain**** its original coat of arms.

In around 1492, a time marked by peace in the region, the Peuschers, lords of the castle, decided to build a noble estate close to the lake, with painstaking attention to every detail. Inhabited sometimes by dukes, sometimes by monks, but also by country gentlemen over the centuries, in 1825 the castle was engulfed in flames and almost destroyed. After having been completely rebuilt, the second part of the castle’s eventful history began.

One of the most prominent visitors, then and to this day, was Johannes Brahms. The composer first came to the small Carinthian fishing village in June 1877.

»I wish to tell you, I alighted in Pörtschach am Wörthersee with the intent of continuing to Vienna on the following day. Yet the first day was so beautiful that I absolutely wished to stay for a second, and the second so beautiful, that I will remain here for a while«, he wrote, and promptly set to work.

A bust of this extraordinary musician remains to this day in the inner courtyard of the castle hotel, reminding us of one of his most creative periods.
